What is speaking in "tongues"? PDF Print E-mail

Speaking in tounges is simply talking in another language. Paul, also known as Apostle to the Gentiles, was given the ability to speak several languages (1 Corinthians 14:18,19). The following Bible quotation gives us an example of people speaking in tongues or different languages. "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" (Acts 2:4-11 NIV).

"then there appeared to them divided TONGUES, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them"
" and they were all filled with the Holy spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the spirit gave them utterance"

is this a forgleam of the ultimate gospel of the two witnesses of rev 11

"and he said to me you must prophesy again about many peoples, nations tongues and kings"
rev 10 :11

Re: Tongues
It seems that many people try to make the subject of speaking in tongues into some very strange, almost alien experience. By studying the scriptures that refer to tongues, it's possible to see that this concept is not that difficult to understand. In 1 Corinthians 14:7-11, Paul said if someone speaks to him in an unknown tongue, it is basically like speaking into the air. Example: If someone speaks in a language that is foreign to you, you have no comprehension of the what that person is saying. The account in Acts 2:4-12 explains how people of many different languages were given help by God's Holy Spirit to understand what each was saying. It was an amazing event that happened at that time. However, in 1 Corinthians 14:26-28 Paul also says if any speak in an unknown tongue, let one interpret, but if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence. To be edifying to all who are there, the words need to be understood. Keep it simple. Remember the simplicity that is in Christ (2 Corinthians 11:3).

I agree with kadeesh about the tongues. There are two that are spoken of. Also, in reference to prayer were the Holy Spirit enables us to pray when we do not know what to pray for. The Holy Spirit knows and prays for us in another Holy language of God.

What scriptures, if any, do the Pentacostals point to defend their form of "tongues"?
— Guest User

The doctrine of the Pentacostals revolves around the Pentacost, and speaking in "tongues", which actually means "languages".

Apparently, one group of the Pentacostals emphasizes a salvation message based on Acts 2:38, that a person needs to repent and be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, and receive the Holy Spirit, that receiving the Holy Spirit is necessary for salvation, and is accompanied by speaking in tongues. There is quite a bit of information about their doctrine, and involvement of their belief on tongues at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentecostal.

There are two distinctly different types of Tongues or Languages refered to in the Bible. The first is earthly languages or Tongues of Men. These are languages that can be known naturally by practicing to speak them. e.g. English, Japanese, Hebrew.

The second is heavenly languages or Tongues of Angels. These are languages that cannot be learnt naturally so Paul the Apostle refers to them as "Unknown Tongues." Here are the scriptures to prove this:

1Co 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

1Co 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

1Co 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself...

1Co 14:13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

That makes sense. So if speaking in tongues means speaking another language, then what is happening in the churches, like the Pentacostals, would be deceptive, correct?
